The Ohio Statehouse is the state capitol building and seat of government for the U.S. state of Ohio. The Greek Revival building is located on Capitol Square in Downtown Columbus. The capitol houses the Ohio General Assembly, consisting of the House of Representatives and the Senate. [2]
The Statehouse was opened to legislators and the public in 1857 when the House and Senate began meeting in their respective chambers and most of the executive offices were occupied. In his first Ohio speech, Lincoln repeated his conviction that “a house divided against itself cannot stand” and took issue with Democrat Stephen Douglas’ concept of “popular sovereignty.”
Its Greek Revival Doric architecture, and its setting in Capitol Square, give the impression of permanence, elegance and grandeur deserved by the original State Legislature who passed a law on January 26, 1838 to build the new Statehouse. The cornerstone of the Ohio Capitol was laid July 4, 1839.
