History. The early 1900s. Long Beach began as an agricultural town, based around its radish industry, but on August 10, 1905, Long Beach incorporated and became another city on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. As the years went on, the city moved from its agricultural heritage and moved toward tourism with the beach becoming increasingly popular.
Long Beach Mississippi Historical Society. The purpose of the Long Beach, Mississippi Historical Society shall be to bring together those people interested in the history of the City of Long Beach and to coordinate their efforts in preserving and recording the history for future generations.

It wasn’t long before Long Beach became known as the Radish Capital of America and achieved a coast wide reputation as THE vegetable market area. The farmers of the day were very successful and northern markets were ripe for our southern produce which was gleefully shipped to them.
The name Long Beach didn’t appear until 1882. This area was first seen on a British map in 1774 listed as BEAR POINT. Perhaps the British may have named the little Indian village with its crystal clear stream and the occasional bear.
