The Rape of Proserpina (Italian: Ratto di Proserpina), more accurately translated as The Abduction of Proserpina, [ 1 ] is a large Baroque marble group sculpture by Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini, executed between 1621 and 1622, when Bernini's career was in its early stage.

Rape of Proserpina (Ratto di Proserpina) is a large sculptural group of marble in the Baroque style, created by Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini and performed between 1621 and 1622. Bernini was only twenty-three years old when he made this artwork.
The proud, insensitive god is dragging Proserpine into Hades, his muscles so taut in the effort to hold the writhing body that his hands sink into her flesh. The arrangement of the sculpture is pushed to the limits of the stability of the two figures, who look away from each other while remaining in frontal positions with respect to the observer.
This stunning sculpture exemplifies the best of the baroque and demonstrates Bernini's ability to handle marble and produce credible figures. Like his other works, the Rape of Persephone is fraught with emotion and tension, achieving a hitherto unseen level of life-like action.
