13 sty 2023 · Built in 1865, Fort Dodge is the oldest permanent settlement in this area of Kansas. It not only protected those traveling on the trail, but provided supplies and a resting place for traders and buffalo hunters. The first buildings were sod and adobe, and some troops lived in dugouts.
Fort Dodge, Kansas, was one of the most important forts on the western frontier. It is located southeast of the Caches, a noted landmark on the Santa Fe Trail, and present-day Dodge City. On April 10, 1865, the fort was established by Captain Henry Pierce by order of Major General Grenville M. Dodge.

The site of Fort Dodge in the U.S. state of Kansas was originally an old campground for wagons traveling along the Santa Fe Trail, just west of the western junction of the Wet and Dry Routes and near the middle or Cimarron Cutoff.
