Each sharp or flat in a key signature is a fifth away from the last, just like the keys in the Circle of Fifths. The order of sharps, which go clockwise along the Circle of Fifths, is: F♯, C♯, G♯, D♯, A♯, E♯, B♯. The order of flats, which go counterclockwise along the Circle of Fifths, is: B♭, E♭, A♭, D♭, G♭, C♭, F♭.

Below you will find a chart of all the Major Scales along with the order of sharps and flats. Remember that we are dealing with diatonic scales where every note must have a different name.
Sharps (#) raise the note by a semitone, whilst flats (b) lower the note by a semitone. Normally this will move a note from a black to a white note (or vice versa). However, in some cases you will notice that if a movement of a semitone is between 2 white notes (e.g. E-F and B-C).
The order in which sharps or flats appear in key signatures is illustrated in the diagram of the circle of fifths. Starting the major scale pattern (whole step, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half) on C requires no sharps or flats.

The key signatures get much easier to remember if you have a few tricks up your sleeve: the order of sharps & flats, AND the circle of fifths. With the circle of fifths, you start on C major (0 sharps/flats). Then, you go down a fifth from that key to get G major. G major has 1 sharp.
