The National Coalition Party won the election with 20.8% of the national popular vote, winning 48 seats in parliament, the third-highest result in the party's history. The Finns Party came in a close second place with the ruling Social Democratic Party of Finland under Prime Minister Marin in third place.
Finland has a presidential election every six years, in which a President of Finland is elected in two rounds on the basis of a direct popular vote. Parliamentary elections are held every four years with a system of proportional representation in multiple seat constituencies. Finnish parliamentary elections use the D'Hondt method.
