The quality of European diesel fuels is specified by the EN 590 standard. Even though these specifications are not mandatory, they are observed by all fuel suppliers in Europe. Beginning from the late 1990s, several diesel fuel properties—including cetane number, sulfur content and FAME biodiesel content—are also subject to regulations.

EN 590 is a standard published by the European Committee for Standardization that describes the physical and chemical properties that all automotive diesel fuel must meet if it is to be sold in the European Union and several other European countries.
Read the Specifications for EN 590 Diesel and EN 590 Gas Oil. EN 590 is the current standard for all automotive diesel fuel sold in the European Union member states and other European countries. This grade of fuel is also called ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD).
The most common type of diesel fuel is a specific fractional distillate of petroleum fuel oil, but alternatives that are not derived from petroleum, such as biodiesel, biomass to liquid (BTL) or gas to liquid (GTL) diesel are increasingly being developed and adopted.
The BS 2869 standard of fuel has four grades that are optimised for different purposes: Grade A2 Gas Oil, referring to diesel fuel for off-road engines and machinery; Grade D Gas Oil, which is diesel fuel for heating applications and older power generators; Grade C1 Kerosene, premium-grade kerosene for home heating.
Reference fuel specifications for heavy-duty diesel engines at the Euro III, Euro IV and Euro V stages are listed in Table 1.4 [1569]. The specification for Euro VI introduced a 7% FAME content [3494]. Table 1.5 summarizes the Euro VI reference fuel specification updated in 2014 [6256].
14 paź 2022 · This specification covers seven grades of diesel fuel oils suitable for various types of diesel engines. These grades are: Grade No. 1-D S15; Grade No. 1-D S500; Grade No. 1-D S5000; Grade No. 2-D S15; Grade No. 2-D S500; Grade No. 2-D S5000; and Grade No. 4-D.
