Baylor University did not have an official mascot during its first 68 years. When Baylor athletics teams competed, the players were sometimes referred to as “the Baptists,” “the Bulldogs” or other nicknames.
Bear Mascot. In 1914, after 70 years without an official mascot, Baylor students voted to name the Bear the official "Patron Saint of all Baylordom." More than two dozen animals were on the ballot, including the buffalo, eagle, antelope, bookworm and bear; the bear won convincingly.
