11 wrz 2023 · The Battle of Lake Champlain was fought at Lake Champlain on July 22, 1609. It was the first battle of the Beaver Wars and the first time Native American Indians living in the region experienced European firearms.
After a failed peace treaty negotiated by Chief Canaqueese, Iroquois moved north into New France along Lake Champlain and the Richelieu River, attacking and blockading Montreal. By 1650, they controlled the area from the Virginia Colony in the south up to the St. Lawrence.

Three hundred and forty years ago (July 29, 1609), a battle of far more consequence to the nation than Saratoga or Gettysburg was fought on the shores of Lake Champlain, near Ticonderoga. Only three white men took part in it, and histories scarcely mention it, yet it was one of the decisive battles of the world.
Champlain's attack on the Mohawks, in 1609, upon the shore of the lake which bears his name, shaped the course of world history for three centuries. It also began a conflict between the French and the Five Nations which lasted for 150 years and which eventually ended French dominion in America.
In 1609, a war party took Champlain as far as the lake that would later be named after him. The battle that took place had a significant effect on relations between the French and the Iroquois: the French allied themselves with the Montagnais, the Algonquins and the Hurons, turning the Iroquois into formidable enemies.
