The ASAM Criteria is a guideline for assessing and treating patients with addiction. It considers six dimensions of care and four levels of care, with decimal gradations and standards.
ASAM Criteria are the most widely used set of guidelines for placement, continued stay and transfer/discharge of patients with addiction and co-occurring conditions. They are based on a multidimensional assessment of six dimensions and a decision logic to identify the level of care with the least restrictiveness and best opportunity for improving the patient’s health.
