The traditional management of canine OA includes anti-inflammatory and analgesic medications, disease-modifying OA agents, weight management, exercise modification, physical rehabilitation modalities, environment modifications, and surgical procedures (TABLE 1).
Its use in small animals is primarily for the treatment of pain, and it is often paired with other pain medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), opioids, or gabapentin. Its use in cats and dogs to treat pain is “off label” or “extra label”.
