Is the software 7zip safe or is it malware/spyware? From www.7-zip.org ???. Good free product, great for the normal home user.
I normally use WinRAR over 7-Zip simply because it's faster and only a little less efficient with compression. I did a few tests on different file types and sizes comparing the 7-Zip and WinRAR default settings on their normal compression and their best compression, and in a lot of cases WinRAR was 50% faster and in some it was actually 100% ...
I am using 7-Zip on Windows XP and whenever I download a .tar.gz file it takes me two steps to completely extract the file(s). I right-click on the example.tar.gz file and choose 7-Zip --> Extract Here from the context menu. I then take the resulting example.tar file and the right-click again and choose 7-Zip --> Extract Here from the context menu.

Every so often I would forget which way round these were, or would try and use one of the .exe's for the wrong purpose, so thought I would get to the bottom of it and then share in case anyone else is curious about the different .exe's.

I'm playing around with 7-Zip to create a self-extracting archive (SFX) executable. I followed the documentation, but I wasn't able to get any close. I'm using the 7-Zip 32 bit and the 7-Zip extra 32 bit. Here is where I'm stuck first to create an SFX file you need to call the following script: copy /b 7zS.sfx + config.txt + archive.7z archive.exe
