The 3rd Battalion, Parachute Regiment (3 PARA), is a battalion sized formation of the British Army's Parachute Regiment and is a subordinate unit within 16 Air Assault Brigade. Roled as an Airborne light infantry unit, the battalion is capable of a wide range of operational taskings.
The next active deployment was Afghanistan in 2006, when 3 PARA formed the nucleus of a 1,200 strong all-arms Battle Group with 16th Air Assault Brigade. This was a fiercely contested tour against Taliban insurgents during which three Battalion soldiers were among 14 soldiers killed and 45 wounded in the Battle Group.

In April/May 06, 3 PARA Battle Group deployed into Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The Battle Group's 6 month mission was to assist the Afghan National Police (ANP) and Afghan National Army (ANA) in bringing security and stability to Helmand.
The Parachute Regiment were formed in the Second World War and, save 1968, have been in constant action since. Determined and courageous, they earned the nickname “Red Devils” from German Paras in North Africa. Heroic actions in Normandy, Arnhem, the Falklands and Afghanistan are cemented in Regimental folklore.
