The 2 pole motor will require 4 times the hp of the 8 pole motor. Make sure you pick a single phase type that gives you the starting and accel torque you need.

If you start looking at efficiency, don't ever overlook the driven load which usually is where most of the losses are. (motors typically above 95% efficiency, pumps often 60% efficiency).
