They were led by 17th-year head coach Jerry Tarkanian. The team played its home games in the Thomas & Mack Center as a member of the Big West Conference.

It determined the national champion for the 1989–90 NCAA Division I men's basketball season, and was contested by the East Regional Champions, No. 3-seeded Duke Blue Devils of the ACC and the West Regional Champions, No. 1-seeded UNLV Runnin' Rebels of the Big West. Both teams were seeking their first national title.
