For over a year, from May 1918 to October 1919, the city of New Orleans, Louisiana was in a frenzied panic over a roaming serial killer dubbed the “Axeman”. The first to succumb to the sharp blade of the Axeman was an Italian grocer named Joseph Maggio and his wife, Catherine, on May 23, 1918.
They had found the door to the safe in Joseph's house open and the safe empty, which indicated a robbery, but money under Joseph's pillow and found in drawers was left behind, along with Catherine's jewelry, wrapped and placed beneath the safe. A black tin box, empty, was found in one corner.
Joseph Maggio, a grocer, and his wife Catherine were brutally assaulted in their home. The attacker used an axe that belonged to the Maggios to slash their throats and then deliver fatal blows to their heads. Neighbors discovered the gruesome scene the next morning. There was no sign of forced entry, and the door had been chiseled open.
