I can't tell you how many times I've had to go round and round with computer manufacturers trying to get warranty authorization on a repair because of this. The other common method is by the serial number and its manufacturing or even refurbishing date.
It's not a case of being entitled to a refund within the first six months and only a replacement thereafter. If the goods are misrepresented or not fit for purpose, a refund can still be sought after six months. And the burden of proof moves to the consumer after the first six months, not one year.

The vast majority of users reporting stock drift are reporting it happens on multiple controllers. This isn't indicating an issue with the controllers
