I've used rechargeable AAs since the 360, but decided to go with a charging pack this time. It's pretty nice just plugging in the controller when you need to charge it. If it runs low, I can just plug it in and keep playing. No need to stop and swap batteries.
Once you're above the threshold (check using a volt meter) you just pop it on your normal charger and let it do its job. Most new chargers test for faulty cells too, so once you're over the threshold you can see whether the battery is indeed beyond repair.
I have a battery pack for all my Xbox controllers and they last quite a long time on a full charge. Personally, I think the battery pack is much more convenient and worth purchasing. Sorry, I don't know anything about buying them online though.
