You are supposed to use the runes when the pillar of light around Ariane matches that rune to draw out the soul from Ariane. (For how they match, see the wiki) The basement key is supposed to be used in the previous quest (Rune Mysteries) and removed after, I don't know what happened there.
Enter the tunnels with the new key and approach the Temple of Light. Remove your gas mask and chant-to the blank teleport crystal by standing south-east of the first slave on the square directly north of the jutting out part of the south rock wall.
Recently I finished "The light within", and I'm really curious about the design behind the last part of the quest (where you need to rotate stones left/right in the Elder halls). It seems that it was customary for many of the Elves quests to contain a light puzzle of some sort.
