Weighted plastic and vinyl is the absolute best for playing. Those fancy expensive wooden sets are just for display, imo.

The Tata Steel Chess India Rapid and Blitz Tournament will take place on November 17-21 in Kolkata. As always, the lineup has top international super grandmasters — Levon Aronian is back in his third outing, while Sam Shankland, Le Quang Liem and Parham Maghsadloo clock up their first appearance at TSCI.
If blitz, then you'll want to grab a clock too. Well within budget, available from many retailers: https://digitalgametechnology.com/products/chess-clocks/dgt-north-american. For wood, I was considering going with House of Staunton for my set (made an eBay purchase instead).
I have the Fischer series and Marshall series and Collector series. Fischer is a lower quality plastic and the pieces are too fat and short. The Collector series has cool bishops but the queen's crown is too small and the pieces are a little too skinny. The Marshall one is best and most well-balanced.
After you have your set that you can play and travel with, let's talk about wood sets. Buying online can be nice, but I've heard of quality issues lately from some major vendors, so if you can possibly buy in person, I would strongly suggest doing so.
Just so you know 99% of wood chess pieces are made in India. Staunton Castle, Chessbazaar, The ChessEmpire are all manufacturers that sell direct. House Of Staunton and Chess House amd American Chess Equipment are excellent vendors.
