Don’t learn SPSS. Nobody worth any salt uses it in industry. It’s a waste of your time to learn it. The only reason you’d need to learn it is if you’re doing research into psychology (even then, R is better) or education “research” (where I had to use it).

I would highly suggest Andy Field's book on SPSS. It's very clear and straightforward, and you will learn it fine. You should spend more time thinking about the bad research practices to avoid than you should worrying about SPSS. Good luck!

SPSS is specifically useful to sociologists. They normally use questionnaires and spss is extremely friendly with that. You can label your variables, create an additional informatory layer, telling you what different values in different variables mean and make your experience far easier to navigate.
