It's a writing rule. You need a space after punctuation of any kind, and a space before punctuation made of two parts (like ; :!?). A space before an opening parenthesis, not after, and the opposite for the closing one.

You put an unbreakable space (alt+255) before exclamation marks, question marks, colons and semi-colons. You need to leave a space between French quotation marks and the text they contain (like that « ... »). Commas and periods behave the same as in English.
