When it comes to pruning, timing is key. For most varieties of hydrangea, pruning should be done in late winter or early spring before new growth starts appearing. Severe pruning should be avoided as it may remove next year's flower buds.

In the fall, Endless Summer and other ever-bloomers can be cut back to control their height and size. In the spring, pruning before blooming begins will actually encourage new growth and increase the number of flower clusters.
Hydrangeas that bloom on new wood can be safely pruned in late fall once the plants have gone dormant or in early spring. Next year’s flower buds won’t be formed until late spring the same year they bloom, so there is no risk of removing the buds if you prune in fall or spring.

Test the stem for life by scraping the bark with a knife. If it’s not green underneath, it’s dead and should be removed.
