Tropes are the means by which a story is told by anyone who has a story to tell. We collect them, for the fun involved. Tropes are not the same thing as cliches.

If a trope is a figure of speech in a verbal medium, then a TV trope is a "figure of speech" in the audiovisual medium of television. It's an extension of the domain of language, or text, into any symbolic presentation of information, which is itself a common trope in film studies.
