Porcelain (/ ˈpɔːrs (ə) lɪn /) is a ceramic material made by heating raw materials, generally including kaolinite, in a kiln to temperatures between 1,200 and 1,400 °C (2,200 and 2,600 °F).
The three main types of porcelain are true, or hard-paste, porcelain; artificial, or soft-paste, porcelain; and bone china. Porcelain was first made in China—in a primitive form during the Tang dynasty (618–907) and in the form best known in the West during the Yuan dynasty (1279–1368).
The primary components of porcelain are clays, feldspar or flint, and silica, all characterized by small particle size. To create different types of porcelain, craftspeople combine these raw materials in varying proportions until they obtain the desired green (unfired) and fired properties.
15 maj 2023 · Porcelain is made from a mixture of kaolin, feldspar, and quartz, which is fired at high temperatures to produce a hard, durable material. The process involves several steps, including mixing the raw materials, forming the porcelain into a desired shape, firing it in a kiln at high temperatures, and then glazing and re-firing it.
11 sty 2024 · Porcelain is a subset of ceramics, and both are made of clay, and both are kiln-fired. However, the porcelain clay from which porcelain is made has a higher density and is fired longer at higher temperatures than other ceramics.
Porcelain is fundamentally composed of three core ingredients: kaolin, feldspar, and quartz. The primary ingredient, kaolin, is a type of clay known for its high fusion temperature, which contributes to the strength and durability of porcelain.
