Performance assessments provide insight into how well students are able to apply the skills they learn in school to real-world situations they will encounter in their lives and careers. Traditional assessments usually consist of true/false, matching, or multiple choice questions.
Frey and Schmitt (2010) state that “performance tests measure skill or ability; are sometimes called alternative assessments or authentic assessments; and scoring often requires subjective judgment” (p. 109).
Performance assessment is a dynamic approach to understanding a student's educational development. Unlike traditional testing methods, which may focus on rote memorization, performance assessments evaluate a student's ability to apply the skills and knowledge they've learned in a practical context.
