An art song is a Western vocal music composition, usually written for one voice with piano accompaniment, and usually in the classical art music tradition. By extension, the term "art song" is used to refer to the collective genre of such songs (e.g., the "art song repertoire"). [1]
24 cze 2023 · In English, they get the rather grandiose title of ‘art song’, to distinguish them from popular vocal music and folksong. In German, they’re known as lieder. In French they’re mélodies.
Another term that one encounters in the field of art song or Lieder is: accompanist. Usually that is a pianist. And there is the perception that the pianist is just a voice in the background to support the singer.
Kunstlied is the proper term for "art song" in German, but music-lovers speaking English or French commonly refer to German art songs as just plain Lieder. Note that this site includes art songs in many languages (e.g., in French, the terms chanson and mélodie are used as well as lieder ).
Lieder and art song. The idea of Lieder soon became adopted by other nations who adapted it to their different national styles and tastes. Composers like Fauré, Debussy and Poulenc are among the great French mélodie (French art song) composers, setting Hugo, Baudelaire, Verlaine and Apollinaire instead of Goethe, Heine, Eichendorff and Mörike.
Those of us who have been touched in profound ways by the sheer beauty and emotional depth of the Lieder of Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, Mahler, R. Strauss and others will need no persuasion that these “art songs,” as they are sometimes called, can still speak to us today.
