11 paź 2022 · What you may not know is that we don't normally refer to young chickens or chicks by those terms. A baby chick is not a hen or a rooster. "Hen" and "rooster" are terms used to refer to adult chickens only. By contrast, baby chickens of either sex are called "chicks," but can also be called "peeps."

Pullets become hens when they are about one year old. This is the exact time they start laying eggs. Young males are referred to as cockerels when below one year old.

Like any young bird, a baby chicken is called a chick. Any chicken from freshly hatched to around eight weeks of age would classify as a chick. A male or female baby chicken could be referred to as a chick.
