In Portugal, a bread roll/bun is simply called "a bread" (pt: um pão). A whole loaf is also "a bread", but I'd say by default it refers to a bun rather than a loaf. Sandwich/toast bread, i.e. the square pre-sliced loaves, is called pão de forma (baking tin bread).
