Lindelof also claimed that HBO's Watchmen wouldn't be a sequel either, but went on to confirm that the series would be set in the decades after the events of the graphic novel.
Short answer: Yes ! Long answer: Read only the Watchmen and maybe Doomsday Clock ! The Before Watchmen comics are iffy to watchmen comics, great reads but not part of the watchmen story ! Spin-offs and different writers, great ones too.

Then you should read "on writing comics" by Alan Moore to understand WHY he is a genius. Then you should read Watchmen, then you should watch the movie again, then you should throw before watchmen in the trash.

29 paź 2019 · Watchmen is canon. But we are not making a “sequel” either. This story will be set in the world its creators painstakingly built… but in the tradition of the work that inspired it, this new story must be original.
Chronologically, these comics are prequels to Watchmen but you will be much better served reading them after you’ve consumed Moore, Gibbons, and Higgins twelve issue Watchmen (and ideally more than once at that).
