I have a vornado and I find it is actually really superior if you need to move a column of air a long distance. For example, blowing air-conditioned air up from the bottom of the stairs works well with the vornado but poorly with other fans.

Update: bought a Vornado 733DC. Part of their "Made in USA" product lineup and still has the old 10 year warranty. I'm a big fan (pun intended) of brushless DC motors, and this one has high CFM for relatively low dB noise rating. Thanks for the reassurances and recommendations!
