Abstract. All aspects of vision adapt—adaptation to light and dark, colors, contrast, direction of motion, orientation, and depth. There are also contingent aftereffects, for example, adaptation to color, contingent upon orientation, which take minutes of viewing to form and may last for hours.
Visual adaptation is typically defined operationally, as a brief and temporary change in sensitivity or perception when exposed to a new stimulus, and by the lingering aftereffects when the stimulus is removed (Webster, 2011). (See illustrations in online supplementary material.)

For instance, the tilt aftereffect affects the perception of tilted lines – after staring at an oriented line, slightly rotated lines appear to be much more different in orientation.
An afterimage is a visual effect that persists after the stimulation has ceased. The effect is produced by exposing the eye to a primary stimulus — i.e., adapting it to a specific exposure of known duration, intensity, and spectral composition — and upon stimulus offset, directing the gaze at a neutral surface.
