Vanishing twin syndrome is evaluated to happen in 36% of twin pregnancies and in half of the pregnancies that begins with at least three or more gestational sacs.

Vanishing twin syndrome (VTS) is a miscarriage that causes a pregnancy involving twins to become a pregnancy involving one embryo. It occurs when one of the embryos detected during an ultrasound stops developing.
The image shows the vanishing twin face down with the spinal cord running from the skull base to the left of the image. The skull is resorbed and the residual skull base is visible with the spinal cord. The appearance of this fetus is unchanged since 22 weeks gestation. The second fetus is normal.
