USS Louisiana (BB-71) was the fifth and final Montana-class battleship planned for construction. She was to be named in honour of the 18th state and was assigned to the Norfolk Navy Yard that was preparing to lay her down at their shipyard at Portsmouth, Virginia.
Because the battleships that would have received the BB-65 and BB-66 hull numbers had been assigned to the Iowa class, the next design was labeled "BB 67-1".
