Basic Allowance for Housing, or BAH, provides uniformed service members equitable housing compensation based on housing costs in local civilian housing markets within the 50 U.S. states when government quarters are not provided. BAH is not intended to cover all of a service member’s housing costs.

Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is a reimbursement paid to active military personnel living with the U.S. but not living in government furnished housing such as barracks. Your monthly BAH pay is based on your location, rank and dependency status. The country is divided into 381 Military Housing Areas (MHAs).
The Allowances Division acquires and analyzes housing and cost-of-living data to determine military compensation through the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH), Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA), Outside the Continental U.S. Cost of Living Allowance (OCONUS COLA), and CONUS COLA for members of the eight Uniformed Services.
