The Mackinac Bridge (/ ˈmækənɔː / MAK-ə-naw; also referred to as the Mighty Mac or Big Mac) [4] is a suspension bridge that connects the Upper and Lower peninsulas of the U.S. state of Michigan. It spans the Straits of Mackinac, a body of water connecting Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, two of the Great Lakes.
The Mackinac Bridge Authority is an independent state agency of the U.S. state of Michigan that operates the Mackinac Bridge across the Straits of Mackinac. The Mackinac Bridge Authority has been directed by the state of Michigan to maintain the Mackinac Bridge as a self-supporting facility.
The Mackinac Bridge is an extraordinary engineering marvel that opened to traffic on November 1, 1957. Before that day, watercraft and airplanes were the only way to cross the Straits of Mackinac between the Lower and Upper Peninsula. Many consider it the 8th wonder of the world.
In Michigan, there are three publicly-owned and operated bridges: Mackinac Bridge, Blue Water Bridge, and International Bridge. There are also two privately-owned and operated border crossings: Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.
The Mackinac Bridge is located on Interstate 75 in northern Michigan at the Straits of Mackinac. The bridge connects Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas. Mackinaw City is located at the south end of the bridge.

The Mackinac Bridge has been standing for over 50 years and ever since its completion has been a major tourist attraction.
