Kansas has had only eight head coaches in the 120 years of basketball at the University of Kansas. In 1919, Karl Schlademan coached, and won, the first game of the season before relinquishing the coaching position to Allen in order to concentrate on his duties as head track coach.
In 1983, Larry Brown headed to the University of Kansas, after coaching in the NBA. Under Brown, Kansas finished first in the Big Eight in 1986, and second in 1984, 1985, and 1987. In 1988, Kansas got off to a 12–8 start, including 1–4 in the Big 8.

Billy Eugene Self Jr. (born December 27, 1962) is an American basketball coach who is the head coach of the Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball team. Self has held various coaching roles at the collegiate level and has been the coach of the Jayhawks since 2003.
Kansas is entering its 126th overall season and Self was named just the eighth head coach in KU basketball history on April 21, 2003. While at Kansas, Self has won two national championships, an NCAA record 13-straight regular-season Big 12 Conference titles, 16 overall, and eight league tournament championships.
