21 lut 2024 · Continental Tropical Air Mass. Continental Tropical (cT) Air Masses form approximately 25 degrees north and south of the Equator over the dry, mostly arid regions of the world. It mainly occurs over deserts, including the Sahara, the deserts of Mexico, Australia, and the Arab Peninsula.
An air mass forms whenever the atmosphere remains in contact with a large, relatively uniform land or sea surface for a time sufficiently long to acquire the temperature and moisture properties of that surface. The Earth’s major air masses originate in polar or subtropical latitudes.
For example, if an air mass forms over a tropical ocean, it is called maritime tropical. If an air mass forms over land in the far north it is called continental polar. An air mass can change as it moves into different environments.
Maritime Tropical air mass results from the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and Gulf Stream. This air mass is characterized by hot, humid conditions. These air masses form in almost all seasons across the south, southeastern and eastern United States. It is associated with cloudiness and precipitation.

By definition, an air mass is a large blob of air with horizontal dimensions of several hundred to a couple of thousand miles, within which temperatures and moisture (dew points) at the surface (or at any other arbitrary altitude) are fairly uniform (they don't change very much with distance).
