I-35 from Austin to Laredo and then 85D from N Laredo sounds good and is fairly direct but the idea of getting hung up in NL for any amount of time doesn't. The crossing at Reynosa looks to be straight forward: cross and stay on the highway all the way through (please correct me if I am wrong).
