With the plug-in hybrid, once you've used up the EV battery range in the first 20-30 miles of the trip you're lugging around that extra battery weight. Also, with the Prime, you lose trunk space for the extra battery space.
EV range changes pretty dramatically based on how much you have to accelerate and decelerate. For example, one route I can take to the grocery store is about 50% longer than the other route, but costs me about 50% less battery because it has 0 stop lights vs 5 lights that I seem to always hit on the shorter route.
