15 paź 2024 · Highlights. The U.S. prison population was 1,230,100 at yearend 2022, a 2% increase from yearend 2021 (1,205,100). The number of females in state or federal prison increased almost 5% from yearend 2021 (83,700) to yearend 2022 (87,800).
From 2021 to 2022, the number of white persons in the correctional population decreased by 99,000 (4%), while the number of Hispanic persons increased by 31,000 (4%), the number of black persons increased by 20,000 (1%), and the number of persons of all other racial groups increased by 8,000 (3%).
Private civil appeals went down 6 percent. U.S. civil appeals increased 1 percent. Criminal appeals decreased 4 percent to 9,894, mainly because of an 11 percent reduction in appeals related to drug crimes and an 18 percent decline in appeals addressing immigration offenses.

Pris-oner petition filings declined for the second year in a row, dropping ten percent to 7,811. Cases with the United States as plaintiff decreased 13 percent to 2,839. The federal district courts docketed 68,315 criminal defendant filings in FY 2022, eight percent fewer than the prior year.

Persons on probation made up 54% of the total correctional population in 2021, down from almost 57% in 2011 (table 3). There were almost 400,000 fewer persons held in state and federal prisons in 2021 than in 2011, and nearly 100,000 fewer in the custody of local jails.
