Definition. Schema-based learning is a central theoretical approach in cognitive and educational psychology as well as in artificial intelligence. Schemas allow learners to reason about unfamiliar learning situations and interpret these situations in terms of their generalized knowledge.

Schema theory describes how knowledge is acquired, processed and organized. The starting assumption of this theory is that “ very act of comprehension involves one’s knowledge of the world ” 4). According to this theory, knowledge is a network of mental frames or cognitive constructs called schema (pl. schemata).
In this chapter, we will discuss the role schematic knowledge plays in guiding the formation and retrieval of memories. A central focus will be placed upon understanding why retrieved memories are biased toward prior beliefs or schematic knowledge.
