From a structural point of view, the nervous system is divided into two major components: the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS includes the brain and spinal cord, serving as the main control center.
Your nervous system uses nerve cells called neurons to send signals, or messages, all over your body. These electrical signals travel among your brain, skin, organs, glands and muscles. The messages help you move your limbs and feel sensations, like pain.
The central nervous system functions to send signals from one cell to others, or from one part of the body to others and to receive feedback. Malfunction of the nervous system can occur as a result of genetic defects, physical damage due to trauma or toxicity, infection, or simply senescence.
