Chulalongkorn [a] (20 September 1853 – 23 October 1910), posthumously honoured as King Chulalongkorn the Great, [b] was the fifth king of Siam from the Chakri dynasty, titled Rama V. Chulalongkorn was born as the son of Mongkut , the fourth king of Siam.

King Chulalongkorn had 77 children with 92 wives, sent his children abroad to study, and employed Western advisors. He was a committed Buddhist and made an effort to introduce morality and ethics in the teaching of children and incorporated Buddhist monasteries in his education system.
Highly revered by his subjects, His Majesty King Chulalongkorn, the 5th monarch of the Chakri Dynasty, was given the honorific title of “Somdet Phra Piya Maharat,” or “the Beloved Great Monarch,” due to the people’s gratitude and reverence towards his clemency for the nation and the people of Thailand.

On a personal note, he had several wives and concubines, and fathered 77 children. He became the first Siamese king to send royal princes to be educated in Europe and the first monarch to visit Europe to manage foreign affairs. The great king died of kidney disease in 1910, at the age of 57.
