For a crisp appearance, shoulder the tenons slightly . For corrected scale reading, use this formula: Tenon Board Thickness + Mortise Height ÷ 2 = Tenon Scale Setting Example: (3⁄4"[20mm] + 5⁄8"[16mm]) ÷ 2 = 11⁄16"[18mm] Set 1⁄ 2"[12,7mm] J tenon scale on 11⁄ 16"[18mm] or on your actual calculated setting. 9-5
12 kwi 2019 · But as a general guideline, make the tenon about 1 ⁄ 3 the total thickness of the tenoned workpiece, and about 1 ⁄ 2 – 2 ⁄ 3 as long as the width of the mortised workpiece.
a tenon’s length should be at least twice its thickness. So, a 2” thick tenon should be four inches long. These minimum tenons are pinned to hold the joint tight but are not designed for tensile loading. Those that will experience tensile loads are often much longer and typically through tenons.
31 mar 2006 · The rule in Ellis’s book is two-fold. First, make the tenon one-half the width of the rail you’re cutting it on (a 2″-wide rail would get a 1″-wide tenon). Second: If that tenon’s width would be greater than six times its thickness, then you should split it into two (or more tenons).

h. Cut your mortises first and then make your tenons to mat. h. It’s easier to fine-tune a tenon’s size than a mortise’s. . You’ll get the best glue bond from joints with smooth surfaces. A proper-size tenon should be tight enough—in a dry fit—to remain in a mortise when turned upside.
