As a CPA who has spent most of his career doing tax work, I don't see that happening unless the internal revenue code gets a major and reductive overhaul, but it could still happen and is worth considering. So lawyers and law students of reddit, is what my friend heard true? Should I run far away from a career in tax law?
In theory, tax law is entirely viable. But unless you go to an absolutely top tier law school, it’s probably not worth it. The big firms—who hire from the best school—have tax departments. I’m general, a law degree is expensive and qualifies you to be a lawyer. Spend a few days here and on other lawyer sites.
So whatever you do, make sure that you’re working your first law firm job under a tax partner or senior tax associate who themselves understand how M&A tax works.
