The most common instrumental assessments used with children are the videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) and the fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES).
In this article, I discuss the following: 1) prevalence, aerodigestive symptoms, and significance of feeding difficulties; 2) physiologic considerations; 3) pathophysiologic mechanisms as a basis for symptoms; and 4) the approach to the management of neonatal dysphagia.
