8 lis 2023 · On 18 November 2022, a strong earthquake occurred in the near trench of Sunda Arc southwest of southern Sumatra, generating a small tsunami recorded at four tide gauge stations (KRUI, BINT, SBLT, and SIKA).
14 maj 2021 · A Map of the Sunda Trench, showing the position of Anak Krakatau at an inflection point in the subduction of the Indo-Australian plate beneath Eurasia.
At the boundary, marked by the Sunda Trench, the northward-moving Australian Plate subducts beneath the Sunda Plate. The subduction zone is capable of generating earthquakes of up to magnitude 8.7, while the Australian Plate may also host deeper earthquakes within the downgoing lithosphere ( intraslab earthquakes ) beneath the coast of Java.
Sunda Trench. The Sunda Trench is a subduction zone extending in an arch from the Northwestern tip of Sumatra to Flores in Eastern Indonesia. A strong earthquake in this zone can generate a tsunami that arrives at the coast within 20 minutes, leaving little time for issuing an early warning.
In 2005, scientists found evidence that the 2004 earthquake activity in the area of the Java Trench could lead to further catastrophic shifting within a relatively short period, perhaps less than a decade. [3] This threat has resulted in international agreements to establish a tsunami warning system in place along the Indian Ocean coast. [4]
20 lut 2023 · Active subduction at the Sunda trench is the principal driver of ongoing India-Asia convergence and Indian indentation. Our models predict that lateral subduction zones lead to mountain growth like the Himalaya over tens of millions of years.
4 gru 2020 · The geometry of the subducted Indo-Australian plate beneath Sumatra is still controversial because of the historical lack of a dense seismic network. Since 2005, Indonesia has been establishing a relatively dense seismic network for real time earthquake monitoring and tsunami warning.
