A 3G test using MIG aka Gas Metal Arc Welding could be short circuit mig, or pulse spray mig and is often 3/8" thick plate with 37.5 degree bevels with an open root. The root might be downhill or uphill and is usually gapped at around 1/8" root opening.
27 gru 2016 · I got out of welding in the 1980s. Went to rigging full time. Only time I welded is when the company needed an extra welder. I’ve taken numerous structural welding tests, with SMAW, and self shielded wire. I’ve never seen this "Rat Hole" test, very interesting!
The 3G weld test assesses your ability to weld vertically, which is often considered one of the more challenging orientations. The test uses plates, and may simulate on-job situations where vertical welding is essential. Here’s a summary of what to expect:

20 cze 2022 · Weld testing is a critical and important step in ensuring the quality of welds. There are many different types of weld tests, each with its own objective & testing requirements. Some common weld tests include Visual Inspection, Bend Testing, tension test, visual inspection, and radiography testing.
1 lis 2023 · The 3G weld test specifically focuses on vertical welding using either uphill or downhill techniques to create fillet or groove welds. Becoming certified in 3G welding can open doors to various industries, including construction, manufacturing, and repair and maintenance.
I recently ran my 1" 3g test at 115A root (1/8 7018), 106 fill and 108 stringer cap. I also had a 5/8" piece setup next to me and did my root on that first, then transitioned to the test piece. I used real tight "e" movements for the root.
