Japanese mathematics lessons, especially for elementary grades, include a significant amount of problem solving. This instructional approach, called structured problem solving, is designed to create interest in mathematics and stimulate creative mathematical activity in the classroom through students’ collaborative work.
This book shows the composition of Guidebook for the curriculum standards in Japan and the elementary mathematics curriculum in Japan. There are roughly two ways of using this book. The first is to use the book as a reference book to learn verbal expressions in English-speaking countries by listing parallel translation in Japanese and in English.
It provides an overview of Japanese theories on mathematics education for developing students who learn mathematics by and for themselves and provides necessary ideas to understand the Japanese approach and lesson study.
